To be able to enroll for 'Cultural and artistic current affairs', students of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy have to be succesfully passed for at least 30 ECTS credits in the Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Literature.

Course Content

This course offers insights into the role of art and culture in contemporary society. We work on the questions "How does art reflect on contemporary society?" and "How can artistic media be used for social change?".

At the same time, the course is conceived as an introduction to various art disciplines branches of art (theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film, etc.), with special attention to policy aspects in these different sectors.

General competencies

- The student is able to define core definitions related to culture and the arts, and to situate the most important key figures therein.
- The student develops knowledge of contemporary cultural goods and theoretical concepts.
- The student can describe the role of art and culture in contemporary society.
- The student takes on a critical attitude in regard to cultural/arts matters tackling societal questions, based on solid arguments. 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 75% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignment with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
SELF Practical assignment determines 75% of the final mark. 

Written examination, multiple-choice without a mark correction;
Individual writing assignment with different parts. 

Absence from at least one of the compulsory examination parts (written multiple-choice exam and assignments) results in absence for the overall assessment.
