This course starts with an introducion on the importance of the knowledge of visual and fine arts materials and techniques for arthistorical practices and for the conservation of artworks. A survey of materials and techniques applied in the Western visual arts from the 15th century till today follows. It will focus on the material study of the object and the scientific resaerch methodes, Following disciplines will be discussed:
-Painting (tempera, oil on panel, oil on canvas, acryl, mixed media)
-Drawings and works on paper (watercolor, ink, charcoal, chalk, crayon, pencil, collage)
-Graphic arts (engraving, etching)
-Sculpture (stone, woord, bronze, metal, montage, installations and ephemeral materials)
-Performances
-Moving images
This course consists of a series of lectures, a paper (visual analysis and condtition report of an artwork) and guest lectures given by external researchers and art restorers' practices.
Students take notes during the lessons.

The student knows and identifies the different materials and techniques applied in visual arts, makes explicit their artistic significance in a comprehensive way and situates them correctly in time and space.
The student knows and the basic principles of the theory of art conservation and the elementary practical applications.
The student identifies the scientific research methods and knows their field of applications and possibilities.
The student gives evidence of an attitudes showing respect for the artwork.

Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Oral examination, with written preparation.
One large and one small question on the subject matter of the teachings
Question based on illustrations
For the second session, a new exam will take place.
