Course Content

The course consists of two modules:
A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I (WPO, semester 1 + 2, 35h) :
This practical seminar alternates short theoretical overviews with exercises, and strengthens essential knowledge of French grammar, corresponding to the CECFR B2 language level. These grammar seminars will be evaluated through regular written tests throughout both semesters.
B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I :
This second module consists of:
a.   A series of lectures (HOC, semester 2, 24h):
•   On the relatedness between the French language and other Romance languages and other language groups and families at large.
•   On the international dimension of French.
•   On language variation and language change: geographical, social and diachronic variations of French.
•   On oral and written language: phonetics, phonology and spelling.
•   On a first introduction to the different components of language description: phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics and discourse analysis.
•   Student presentations: students prepare a group presentation about a certain geographical or social variety of French, which is part of the course content to be studied for the oral exam.

b. A practical seminar (WPO, semester 2, 6h):

These exercises aim to acquire a certain number of techniques and instruments essential to the scientific study of the French language:
• Introduction to bibliographic research;
• Drafting of bibliographical references;
• Training in phonetic writing.

Ce cours est composé de deux modules :

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I (WPO semestre 1 + 2, 35 heures) :
Le cours comprend des travaux pratiques lors desquels une courte introduction théorique alterne avec des séries d’exercices qui forment une récapitulation ou un approfondissement de la grammaire du français enseignée dans l’enseignement secondaire.
B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I :
Ce deuxième module est composé de:
a) Un cours magistral (HOC, semestre 2, 24 heures):
Le cours présente les domaines et les concepts de la linguistique française contemporaine. Il se veut aussi une introduction à quelques approches théoriques générales, appliquées au français. Les thématiques suivantes sont abordées :

Le rapport du français avec les autres langues et familles de langues;
La dimension internationale du français ;
Les différents types de variation du français : géographique, sociale et
diachronique ;
Les divers niveaux de description de la langue ;
La langue orale et écrite : phonétique, phonologie et orthographe ;
Une première introduction des divers niveaux de description de la langue : phonétique et phonologie, morphologie, lexicologie, syntaxe, sémantique et analyse du discours.

b) Un séminaire pratique (WPO, semestre 2, 4 heures):
Les exercices ont pour objectif d’acquérir un certain nombre de techniques et d’instruments indispensables à l’étude scientifique de la langue française :
• Initiation à la recherche bibliographique ;
• Rédaction de références bibliographiques ;
• Entraînement à l’écriture phonétique.

Teaching method Grammaire normative I:

1) Intake test

All students participate in an intake test at the beginning of the academic year to determine their entry level knowledge of French grammar. The obtained results are not calculated in the final result, but will help each student self-assess how much additional effort and study is required to attain the prescribed final competences and learning outcomes at the end of this course. If a student scores 15/20 or more, (s)he will be exempted from partaking in all classes and written assessments of that module. In this cas, the result obtained on the entry test will be accepted as the final exam result. In return, (s)he will prepare an exposé on a grammatical subject assigend by the lecturer and prepare exercises with his or her peers. The student will be given a bonus ranging from -2,-1,0 to +1,+2 on top the score (s)he obtained on the intake test.

2) Practical group seminars alternating theory and exercises:
The lecturer prepares a set of theoretical explanations on the use, form and function of grammatical subject, after which students prepare a set of exercices in group.

3) Individual preparation of exercises:
Students will prepare the remainder of the exercises that have not been corrected during lectures. All the exercises that have not been corrected during class hours will be uploaded on the Canvas platform.

Méthode d’enseignement :

1) Un test d’entrée détermine le niveau des étudiants dès le début de l’année académique. Ce test d’entrée permet à l’étudiant de connaître son niveau de maîtrise des règles grammaticales de la langue française dès le début de l’année académique. Avant même que les cours aient réellement débuté, il/ elle est par conséquent conscient des préparations ou des efforts qu’il/ elle devra entreprendre pour atteindre les objectifs du cours. Si un étudiant obtient au moins un 15/20 pour ce test d’entrée, il sera dispensé des exercices ainsi que de l’examen final du cours ‘Grammaire normative I’. En contrepartie, il exposera un sujet grammatical du syllabus et il accompagnera ses collègues de classe pour la préparation des exercices, travail pour lequel cet étudiant recevra un bonus de ‘-2, -1, 0, +1, +2’ qui sera ajouté à la note obtenue pour le test d’entrée.

2) Séminaires collectifs (théorie et exercices) :

Application correcte des règles grammaticales de base du français qui ont été enseignées dans l’enseignement secondaire. La théorie est enseignée pendant les séminaires, après quoi une série d’exercices sont préparés de manière collective.

3) Préparation individuelle d’exercices:

Les exercices qui n’ont pas été faits pendant les séminaires sont préparés à la maison, après quoi les étudiants les corrigent à l’aide de corrigés qui sont téléchargés sur Canvas.

Students can present an overview of the different points of view from which one can approach the study of the French language.

• L’étudiant(e) est capable de
1) expliquer les concepts centraux exposés dans le cours ;
2) les illustrer avec des exemples pertinents ;
3) établir des liens entre diverses parties du cours ;
4) décrire plusieurs variétés du français.
• L’étudiant(e) est capable de préparer et présenter un exposé en groupe.
• L’étudiant(e) est capable de rédiger et déchiffrer des transcriptions phonétiques.
• L’étudiant(e) est capable de rédiger une bibliographie selon les directives vues lors
des séminaires pratiques.
• L’étudiant(e) prend des notes pendant les cours afin de stimuler l’analyse réflexive.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 35% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 15% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Mond. exam. Ling. franç. I with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Schriftelijk examen GN I with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Present + oef. Ling franç. I with a relative weight of 15 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I:

Written exam (50% of the final grade):

The progress of the student is assessed during both semesters through an entry test followed by written intermediate tests. Students can be exempted of the final written exam, if (s)he obtains an average result of 15/20 on the intake test or 14/20 on the intermediates tests. Students who score less than 15/20 on the entry test will not have to partake in the written intermediate tests and final written exam. Students who score less than 14/20 on the intermediate tests will participate to the final written exam of Grammaire normative I.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I (5% + 45% of the final grade)

- Practical seminar (WPO) with permanent evaluation (5%):

The progress of the student is assessed during the second semester through written intermediate tests. Students can be exempted from writing the written exam, provided (s)he obtains an average score of 14/20 on these tests. Students who do not receive this exemption will participate to the final written exam of Linguistique française I: exercices.

- Lectures (HOC): oral exam (35%) + team presentation (10%):

All students prepare a group presentation about one specific variety of French. If a student does not participate in this group presentation, (s)he will prepare an individual paper for the second exam period. All students also partake in the oral exam.

ADDITIONAL EVALUATION CRITERIA:

- The final grade is the sum of partial grades obtained for both modules (Grammaire normative I seminars, Linguistique française I lectures, Linguistique française I: exercices practical seminars), provided that each partial grade is no lower than 08/20. If however one or more partial grades are lower than 08/20, the final grade will automatically be calculated at 08/20, regardless of the other obtained grades.

- The final oral and written exams, as well as the group presentations are compulsory. Any absence for one of these compulsory evaluations will result in an "absence" mark for the final grade.

- The partial results of 14/20 or higher can be transferred to the second exam period. Students who decide not to transfer this partial result are authorized to retake the same evaluation during the second exam period in August or September to replace the result during the first period, on the condition that they inform their lecturer of their decision before the start of the second exam period. Once a student has notified his / her wish to participate to the second evaluation in August/September in order to replace a partial result, he/ she irrevocably loses this partial result.

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I (50% de la note finale)
Ce module intervient pour 50% dans la note finale du cours Grammaire et linguistique du français: introduction. Les progrès de l’étudiant(e) sont évalués de manière continue pendant toute l’année académique au moyen de tests réguliers : un test d'entrée et des tests réguliers après chaque chapitre. Sur la base des résultats obtenus lors des tests, l’étudiant(e) peut obtenir une dispense pour l’examen final du module Grammaire normative I. Il ou elle devra obtenir au moins 15/20 au test d'entrée ou une moyenne de 14/20 sur les tests réguliers. Les étudiants qui n'ont pas obtenu de dispense (soit au test d'entrée, soit aux tests réguliers) passent l’examen final écrit.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I (50% de la note finale)

Examen oral (35% de la note finale)
Exposé (10%, de la note finale) : la présentation de l’exposé est obligatoire et conditionne la participation à l’examen oral.
Séminaire pratique (5% de la note finale)

Les progrès de L’étudiant(e) sont évalués pendant le deuxième semestre au moyen de tests intermédiaires réguliers. L’étudiant(e) peut obtenir une dispense pour l’examen final des exercices de ce module si elle obtient une moyenne de 14/20. Les étudiant(e)s n’ayant pas obtenu cette dispense passent l’examen final écrit des exercices du module. La participation à l’exposé est obligatoire. Les étudiant(e)s n'ayant pas présenté d'exposés doivent obligatoirement rentrer un travail écrite en seconde période d'examen afin de pouvoir valider le cours.

Conditions d'évaluations complémentaires:

La note finale du cours représente la somme de tous les résultats partiels obtenus pour les deux modules, à condition toutefois que ces deux résultats ne soient pas inférieurs à un 08/20. Si c’est le cas pour l’un des résultats, la note finale du cours sera également inférieure à un 08/20, quel que soit le résultat obtenu pour l’autre module. Les résultats partiels représentant un 14/20 ou plus sont transférés à la seconde session, à la condition que l'étudiant(e) communique cette décision au professeur avant le début de la seconde période d'examens. Il ou elle perd alors irrévocablement le résultat partiel obtenu en première session.
