Course Content

This course offers a historical overview of the major movements in European literature. It studies literary developments in their socio-cultural context and highlights the main genres and authors for each movement. By studying representative examples, students gain insight into the different movements, their interrelations and developments. The course thus provides a literary-historical framework that serves as a basis for subsequent literary courses.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student demonstrates knowledge of the major European literary movements from Antiquity to the present day. S/he is able to understand these movements in their socio-cultural context.
The student is familiar with the main genres, authors and works for each movement and can situate these in time and place.
The student has insight in the way movements develop and relate to each other.
The student is able to interpret examples within their historical, socio-cultural context.
The student understands important literary-historical concepts and is able to apply them correctly.
The student understands how literary value judgements are historically determined.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
