Course Content

The course in 'Algemeen boekhouden' deals with important topics that all students of management should study, including the accounting for sales revenues, inventories, depreciation, liabilities, stockholders' equity, intercorporate investments and income taxes. Accounting procedures such as transaction analysis, journalising and posting are given abundant consideration. A major feature is the use of the fundamental accounting equation as a central thread throughout the course explaining new concepts and analysing transactions.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student:

  • knows the basic accounting terminology;
  • masters the basic principles of double-entry accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and the Belgian accounting legislation;
  • is able to account for the most common business transactions and to translate these transactions to items of the balance sheet, the income statement and the profit appropriation;
  • understands the effect of accounting choices (eg, choice of accounting policies); and
  • can relate the different sections of the balance sheet, the income statement and the profit appropriation.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Written exam, both in the 1st and the 2nd exam session.
Theory & exercises have approximately equal weight.

Around week 7 of the semester, an intermediate test is organized. The objective of this test is to improve the basic understanding of accounting concepts. A good performance on this test can result in a bonus of max. 2 points on the final grade.
