Course Content

This class provides an introduction to human biology including heredity and genetics, with examples of prominent contemporary issues of health and disease. It starts with an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the different organ systems, and continues with the biology of reproduction and genetics, and the biological processes that underlie development and aging. Special attention is paid to contemporary health themes such as nutrition and environment, addiction, successful ageing, etc.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student acquires introductory knowledge about the biological basis of the functioning of the human body, genetics and disease processes. The student thus gains insight into holistic interactions between physical and psychological functioning. This class aims to prepare students for courses that rely on some biological knowledge, but in a more general sense, it aims to prepare them for the increasingly multidisciplinary field of contemporary health science.
