The subject or topic of the bachelor paper is determined in consultation with the supervisor. It must be related to one or more courses from the VUB bachelor programme Linguistics & Literary Studies and, more generally, be compatible with a domain of study that falls within the scope of the degree of Bachelor in Linguistics & Literary Studies.
The bachelor paper is written in one of the two chosen languages of study (in the two-language combination).

Final competencies: The bachelor paper aims at demonstrating that the student is capable of approaching a topic in a scientific and critical way. The student herewith also illustrates that he/she is familiar with the recent developments in the analysed domain and that he/she possesses the necessary skills to produce a scientific text in one of the two main languages chosen in the two-language-combination.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Paper determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:
1. The subject of the Bachelor's paper is related to one or more course units from the Bachelor's programme and should be in a field that corresponds to the Bachelor's degree to be obtained in Language and Literature.If this is not the case, the student will receive a sanction of an insufficient score.
2. The Bachelor's paper is written in one of the two study languages chosen in the bilingual combination. If this is not the case, the student will receive a sanction of an insufficient score.
3. The size of the Bachelor's paper is between 7,000 and 10,000 words, excluding appendices, depending on the subject or discipline. Deviations from these target figures are possible with the written approval of the supervisor. If this is not the case, the student will receive a sanction of an insufficient score.
