Students must have taken 'Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse letterkunde: 1850-1945', before they can enroll in 'Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse letterkunde na 1945'​. If you are enrolled in a preparatory programme you can register this course without restrictions.

Course Content

1. Analysis and historical overview of the five most important modernist writers: Reve, Hermans, Mulisch, Claus, and Boon, and of their work’s context. Attention is also paid to the prose experiments of the fifties and early sixties, and to existentialist prose.

2. Poetry experiments of the fifties and sixties.

Powerpoints are available for the historical overview, to be completed by the students with notes. A digital syllabus with copies of poetical texts and a selection of articles is available for the students. In addition, a reading list containing a selection of the novels and poems of the covered authors has been made.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

– Through this course, the student gains knowledge of the most important poetical developments in Dutch literature after 1945. He/she is familiar with the works of the most important modernists and experimental authors.
- The student also has insight in lyrical analysis and prose analysis (narrator, focalisation, consciousness proposals, space/time, etc.), and he/she can apply this to arbitrary text (fragments).
- In addition, he / she is able to formulate a problem, and to independently find and critically assimilate responsible secondary literature.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling Examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: Mondeling examen met schriftelijke voorbereiding (min. 15 minuten). De student moet de helft halen voor het mondeling om te kunnen slagen op het geheel van het examen. Studenten kunnen niet slagen als ze het standaard Nederlands niet beheersen. De schriftelijke voorbereiding van het mondelinge examen dient uitsluitend als steun voor de studenten, wordt aan het eind van het examen ongewijzigd afgegeven maar wordt niet beoordeeld.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Additional info regarding evaluation

Only for the second examination period the permanent evaluation is replaced by a written task. Tasks for the second examination period must be handed in before 31st of July. 

In a study manual provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester, the evaluation is detailed in a binding way.
