Course Content

This course introduces students to a wide range of approaches and methods in literary studies and linguistics. After a few introductory sessions, students are introduced to formalist, historicist, political, psychoanalytical and intermedial approaches in literary studies. They learn how to make surveys, conduct interviews and analyse data statistically. In addition, the course discusses various methods for corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

1. The student is familiar with different approaches and methods in literary studies and linguistics.

2. The student can independently find and assess scientific articles in the fields of literary studies and linguistics.

3. The student is able to identify and critically analyse the method used in scientific articles in literary studies and linguistics.

4. The student is able to argue why a certain method is or is not suitable for a certain type of research.

5. The student is able to apply a selection of methods to their own research.

6. The student is able to reflect on scientific methods and their applications in academic English.

 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schrift. examen with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Written exam in the form of reflection papers and multiple choice exam. Reflection paper in linguistics determines 40% of the total mark. Reflection paper in literary studies determines 40% of the final mark. Multiple choice exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If the student submits an assignment late, he/she will receive 0/20 for that assignment. 
If the student fails the course, he/she must retake all sections for which he/she failed.
If the student fails the reflection paper (language arts and/or literature), he/she must rework and resubmit the reflection paper.
The same assignments, deadlines and evaluation method apply to all students.
