- Course Content
The course provides insight in the Belgian federal state structure and the federal practice. It also introduces the students to the current political and public debate on federalism, nationalism, constitutional reform and linguistic politics, particularly through guest lectures by practitioners from the political sphere. The analysis of the current federal system as well as the different visions on the future of federalism in Belgium are discussed widely. Thorough reflection and discussion are strongly stimulated.

General Competencies
The students should have knowledge and insight in the Belgian federal system, as well as in its practical functioning. They also need to have thorough knowledge of the different analyses and visions that exist about the current federal system and how it should evolve. The larger context of relations between Belgium’s language communities and nationalism in Belgium should also be known by students. They also have to be able to critically reflect on these matters and to position themselves in debates on them based on rational arguments.

- know the important theories used to analyse and explain processes of policy- and decision-making and societal change;
