Course Content

This course provides a broad overview of the development of contemporary Belgium (1830 to today). The following topics will therefore
be considered: the origin of contemporary Belgium, social aspects (demography, social groups, living conditions, etc.); the economic sectors; the political institutions and rules of play; social movements and parties; the socio-economic policy; Belgium and international relations.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student can describe and analyse the main points in the evolution of Belgian society since 1830. In addition to factual knowledge the students demonstrate an understanding in the structural characteristics of Belgian history and their interrelationships.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Examination with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Three general questions will be asked, for instance: Analyse the evolution of suffrage in Belgium; Analyse the industrial development in Belgium before the First World War. Finally
    the students will be given a few short factual questions. For instance: What is the Farmers Union (Boerenbond)? Students who failed the written examen for at least three times, can ask to have an oral exam. In that case, they will have to answer two large questions (after a written preparation period of about five minutes).
