This course offers an overview of the basic processes that operate within and between teams and groups, and the role of leadership.
In the first part of this course, we start by looking at basic group processes and then at one of the most fascinating and pressing problems in group dynamics, namely conflicts between groups. You will learn that group conflicts are an inherent part of group existence itself. Furthermore we discuss the influence a majority and minority have on the ideas and beliefs in a group. Next we consider aspects of decision making that have an influence on the quality and quantity of group performance. The role of a leader is also taken into account.
We will practice in class some important skills and techniques during decision making, like brainstorming, the nominal group technique and idea writing. In addition we will illustrate and practice several aspects of leadership, and discuss which type of leadership is most appropriate in certain group situations.
In the second part of this course, we focus on teams and leadership in organizations. We discuss the different aspects that influence team performance (components, trust, cohesion, …) and the different team types with their advantages and consequences within an organization. We end the course with a focus on leadership and how power and influence can be applied within an organizational context.
