Course Content

In this course, we will critically examine the importance of culture for psychological processes. We explore how cultural identities are shaped in everyday live and how cultural identity influences the way people enact. Also, we will examine the relationship between culture / cultural processes play within metropolitan contexts and with regard to  clinical psychology.
General themes that are discussed include:
•    Culture and (super)diversity (different 'forms' of cultural differences);  intersectionality
•    Culture and emotions; acculturation; de-colonization
•    Migration
•    Metropolitan challenges (social inclusion and exclusion; poverty)

Themes related to clinical psychology (collaboration with vzw Solentra and OTA vzw) –  are a.o.
- Culture and education 
- Dealing with trauma & ethnopsychiatry (PACCT method: Psychiatry Assisting the Cultural diverse Community in Creating healing Ties)

Students learn to to analyze underlying assumptions in cross-cultural psychology
Students are aware of the consequences that underlying assumptions have for research and practice.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
