6 ECTS credits
150 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 4023494FNR voor alle studenten in het 1e en 2e semester met een gespecialiseerd master niveau.
Archaeological sciences constitute an integral and important part of current archaeological
research. This course offers students theoretical and practical insights into the most commonly
applied methods (including botany, physical anthropology, dating methods, zooarchaeology, …),
with a special focus on bioarchaeology (particularly isotope studies) and geoarchaeology.
Students are expected to gain hands-on experience in the latter two specialisms through
seminars, laboratory-based projects, and field practice. Bioarchaeology focuses on the
contribution of analytical chemistry, and more specifically how isotope geochemistry can be
used to better understand diet, mobility and landscape use of ancient populations.
Geoarchaeology familiarizes students with key methods and concepts in earth sciences applied to
archaeological materials. It addresses how the study of soils and sediments contributes to the
reconstruction of past lifeways and archaeological contexts, from individual sites to landscapes.
The main focus of this course will be on applications within archaeology, but will include wider
implications concerning environmental studies, forensic sciences and paleontology.
It is important to note that several parts of this course take place in laboratories that are only open during the day. These lab sessions cannot be recoreded and require attendence during the day.
The student will have insight in the methods and techniques from archaeological sciences
applied in present-day archaeological practice. The student will gain an understanding of the use
of a variety of geoarchaeological and isotope geochemistry methods, including hands-on
experience regarding their applications. This knowledge is acquired through a combination of
theoretical lectures supported and illustrated by laboratory work, field exercises and analyses of
case-studies reported in the scientific literature.
