Learning Outcomes

In the framework of the ‘Master of Science in Civil Engineering’ programme, the student combines a broad multidisciplinary engineering education with a further specialisation in construction engineering, as a continuation of the broad, multipurpose scientific knowledge gained in the ‘Bachelor of Engineering’ programme.
The overall objective of the programme is to form academic engineers that can deliver services to society in many areas and are able to carry out and manage projects as skilled engineers. The academic programme has a close relationship with the scientific research in the related fields and forms the basis for lifelong learning.
The specific objectives of the programme include a training in the design, building and maintenance of constructions, with due regard for the stability, safety, sustainability, cost and the environment. Besides courses are being offered on a number of relevant secondary aspects such as economics, industrial law, management, etc.
The engineer also requires a set of skills that should allow him or her to address any structural problem in a professional way, to collect and process the necessary information in an efficient manner, and to formulate and implement a solution method. In this context, the training provides the necessary knowledge and skills to critically carry out research, independently or in team. Finally, the training should provide the engineer the necessary skills and attitudes to play a responsible and leading role in the realisation of construction projects. Hereby, he or she should have due attention and understanding of the social issues and of the place and the role of technology and of the engineer in society, with respect for people and the environment.
After the programme, the young engineer has acquired knowledge and a range of skills, which allows her or him to start up and develop a successful professional career.
The subject-specific minimum requirements to all graduates of the Master’s degree programmes in Engineering - regardless of their specialisation – are to:
(a) have a broad knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry and a polyvalent scientific understanding. This knowledge is largely taught in the Bachelor program, but is developed further in all courses at Master level; (b) have a basic knowledge in mechanics, electricity, electronics and computing, which provides a versatile understanding of all construction and fabrication techniques, their performance and use and the maintenance of equipment; (c) be able to formulate definitions, make abstractions, think critically, apply dimensional analysis; possess programming skills; make and present (scientific) reports, using informatics resources; (d) possess skills in the field of measuring and experimenting and of error analysis.
In addition, the requirements to the graduates of the ‘Master of Science in Civil Engineering’ programme are to:
(a) be able to design and dimension structures and buildings, know the construction techniques, plan and organise a construction site, hereby considering also their sustainability and environmental impacts; (b) know the properties and fabrication techniques of building materials such as steel, concrete and composites; (c) understand the geology and topography to calculate and draw routes and earth moving; (d) have knowledge about soil mechanics, foundation engineering and earthworks, such as excavation, drilling, pile driving, drainage,…(e) have basic knowledge in the field of hydraulics and hydrology.
Depending on the option chosen, advanced knowledge and skills will have been acquired in the areas of: (a) the design and analysis of structures; (b) (geo-)materials, or (c) hydrology and water management.
In addition to the previously mentioned specific skills and knowledge, the engineer also requires general skills, which the students have partly developed by their own and partly during the training. These skills include: (a) reasoning: logical thinking and spatial awareness; (b) communication skills: knowledge of languages (English, French, ...), mobility; (c) social and civic skills: responsibility and teamwork; (d) creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, efficient use of time.
